Need help using your Linksys router as a receiver but don’t know how? If yes, then the article is for you. A receiver can help you boost the connectivity and range of your wireless router for online gaming or wireless networking etc. The below mentioned guide will help you perform the desired task on your own. This will essentially save you from looking for Linksys technical support.
Buy a Linksys wireless router adapter and connect it to your computer. This would require you to have two routers at your place. One of them will be turned as repeater using a wireless router adapter. You might have to shell out 45-60$ to get one.
First ensure that your router model is supported by firmware software like Tomato or DD-WRT among others. Thereafter, download and install any one from its official or a trusted website. If the software is downloaded in a zip file, extract and archive its contents into a folder and place it (the folder) on desktop for convenience. You can put it to any location of your choice but make sure that it is easily accessible in next steps.
The software has to be installed on your Linksys router and then updated with its firmware. To do so, connect your router directly to the computer using an Ethernet cable. Login to the router’s configuration page using ‘192.168.1.1’ (open your internet browser and type it in the address field without quotes and then hit Enter). You would be required to enter username & password details to login. Check you router docs for the information.
When logged in, navigate to the Administration tab and then the Firmware Upgrade sub-tab. click on the Browse button and browse to the location where the firmware file is save to. Thereafter, click on the Upgrade button, follow the instructions and you are good to go. Do not turn off the device while the upgrade is in progress.
When done, login again to the router interface using the default IP address ‘192.168.1.1’. Enter the credentials and click on the OK or Login button to proceed (you can also hit the Enter key after keying in the details). If you are unable to login (as it usually happens after DD-WRT firmware upgrade), then hard reset your router. This will restore the router to default settings including username and password. Check your router manual for the default information.
Once you have logged in again, navigate to the Advanced tab and then Wireless in the Tomato sidebar. Make the necessary configurations as required including tracking bandwidth usage and setting Quality of Service Rules etc.
